Gut Healthy Stewed Apples

An apple a day really can keep the doctor away! Did you know that the fibre, pectin and flavonoids in apples are great for promoting good gut health? When you cook apples, they release extra pectin which is a rich source of soluble fibre and acts as a prebiotic, a great source of food for our good gut bacteria.

This Gut Healthy Stewed Apples are quick and easy to make and super versatile; a great topper for your morning bowl of porridge or granola, can be used to make an apple crumble or added to a smoothie for breakfast on the go! We also love to use stewed apples in Charli's Apple Cinnamon Pancakes recipe! They can be made in batches and frozen to be used another day, handy to have knocking about to fill the fibre gap!

  1. Wash your apples well, core and cut into wedges. You do not need to peel your apples if you are going to keep them in wedges.
  2. Add to a saucepan with the water and cinnamon. Cook over a low heat, very slowly until soft. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
  3. We gently mashed our apples to make a smoother consistency, however this step is optional and you can just leave your apples in wedges if you prefer. Enjoy on your morning bowl, on top of pancakes, with yoghurt or in an apple crumble!
